The Jane Austen Book Club

“The Jane Austen Book Club”  by Karen Joy Fowler

The Jane Austen Book Club is a very funny and touching book. In the beginning, it was a little confusing with all the different characters, but the author of the book , Karen Joy Fowlor writes the book on a way, that you will get to know everyone and the way they are thinking. And when you get to know everyone you’ll really enjoy reading it. It gets very addictive and it gives an other meaning to reading. When you see the cover of the book, you’ll think that it seems like a book for children, but that’s really not the case.

In the book there is a woman named Jocelyn, she decides to start a book club; all-Austen-all-the-time book club. There are six members who all live in California and adore the novels of Jane Austen. Everyone has his favorite  Austen. They read every month an other Austen, and the one who owns that Austen, leads the gathering.

The six members are Jocelyn, a woman in the early fifties who has never been married, and she cares more about finding love for someone else, than finding love for herself. She has lots of time for her hobbies and she lives with her dogs. The second member of the club is Sylvia, she and Jocelyn have been friends sins high school. Sylvia has a hard time, while her husband has asked for a divorce. The third member is Allegra, the daughter of Sylvia. She is about thirty years old, and she is lesbian but nobody has a problem with it. Allegra decides to live with her mother for a while, to support her. Then there is Bernadette, the oldest member of the group, just rounding the bend of sixty-seven. Bernadette is a woman who has been married a lot of times, but she doesn’t give up on love. The youngest member is Prudie, she’s twenty-eight years old and she’s a French teacher at a high school. She has some problems with her husband, and their relationship isn’t working that well. Except for that, she is also falling in love with a student. The last member is, Grigg a man in the early forties. He is single, and Jocelyn wants to pair him off with Sylvia. But she doesn’t see that there is true love between her and Grigg, she is blind for love.

These six people have different perspectives on the different books of Jane Austen. They all have some problems in their life, and they can all relevant them to the books. When they are discussing the books, they are often talking about their own lives.  The novels of Jane Austen are usually concerned about finding the right romantic partner for her. And all the problems of the members are based on finding someone to love. During the six months, their lives begin to change and beautiful but also terrible things happen.

The Jane Austen Book Club is a really good book. It’s more about observation of the characters, than about an action or plot in the book. The author should have been familiar with the books of Jane Austen, to put all the perspectives in one story. And to understand all the illusions of the novels. It’s a book that makes us think about what reading is all about in the first place.

I really enjoyed reading this book, because it shows you about people their lives, but also about the way you can think of a book. And how your life has an influence on your perspective of a book. I would recommend it to anybody who likes to read a fun and not heavy book. There is also a movie made about the book.
