The Lack of privacy and the Effect of No Individualism.
Today almost everybody in the world can be who they want themselves to be. You are allowed to think what you want to think, to write what you want to write and even to say anything what you want to say. Of course there are rules and laws, but they are wide enough to be able to develop yourself and to create your own opinion about things.
But what if your government desides that everybody must be controlled and has to live like compliant breathing robots. That even one wrong word can be enough to be punished or to be killed. Would you be happy?
Such kind of story is written down in a book called 1984 by George Orwell. It is about how you are not allowed to think and to act different than your own government. The tough rules make appreciate life difficult and it is only a matter of time before you get caught by doing something they do not like. From the day you were born till the day you die, functioning as a normal human being is one of the biggest challenges. It is like living in a nightmare with no ending.
The most important thing to do, if you want people to be tractable, is to let them believe in something that seems good for themselves. In the book it is done by so called Telescreens. There volume can be turned down, but they can never be shut off. Day and night a voice is telling you how awesome the government is and how you should be as a person. By threatening you, you will become a follower, just like they wanted. Your kids will grow up with the tought that nothing else is right except the stories told by the Telescreens. It is something you can not escape.
Big brother is watching you.
The idea of always being watched no matter were I am at and no matter what I am doing, gives me goosebumps. Certainly, when it has not good intentions, when it is waiting until you make that stupid mistake. That kind of mistake where you will be punish and humiliated for. The lack of privacy drives people crazy. You have to think about every step you take, every move you make and even about your own thoughts. Finally the mind will go crazy and people will become psychiatric.
Because the people are being ‘controlled’ with everything they do and everything they think, everyone will become similiar. I think there will occur a natural selection just like the theory of Darwin ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin ). When there are no differences between people, you are more vulnerable, cause you have not got the chance to specialize in something. And certainly in a situation like this, where it is out of the question to even be yourself. It takes a lot of courage and strength to distinguish youself from everybody else. I think it will become a battle where only the fittest and the strongest are going to survive.
Privacy and individualism is very important in a society but also personally. It helps people to function and to build a happy and social life.
