The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Secret Garden is a book written by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

The book is about a girl called Mary Lennox. Mary is a very disagreeable child. Nobody likes her and she doesn’t like anyone. In India, she always had servants to look after her, but after the death of her parents, she has to move to her uncle in England, who lives in a enormous mansion. In the new mansion she will have to amuse herself. At first, she has no interest in the outside world but because there is nothing else to do, she starts exploring the gardens around the house. One day, she meets Ben Weatherstaff, who works in the gardens. He tells her that there is a secret garden that no one has entered in ten years. This has a mayor influence on Marys attitude because, for the first time in her life, she is interested in something and she feels the urge to do something by herself. From that moment on, her search for the secret garden begins. In the book there are a couple of important characters who change the way Mary behaves. The most important one is Martha, who is a young girl who comes from a poor family with a lot of children. For her, it is very unusual to see that a ten year old girl can’t even dress herself. For Mary this is totally different because she used to be served by her servants and Ayah. The fact that Mary has to take care of herself, is a very important thing in the book. It makes her realize that she is very spoiled and it changes the way she thinks of other people and also thinks of herself. In ‘The Secret Garden’, a girl finds a totally different world and also finds herself. There’s also a movie about the book.

The development of Mary and the wonderful characters make this book so special. All the characters make you feel like you are also a participant in the story. While reading, you have the feeling you see the people. Once you start reading, you have your own image of what everyone looks like because the descriptions of the characters are really precise. In this book, there are no ordinary people. Everyone can do something special or is strange in his or her way. For example Dickon, the brother of Martha, the maid. He can communicate with animals and everybody loves him. You also have Colin, a boy who has never been outside. Mary shows him that staying in a room and being sad is not the only way to live your life.

This book makes you see the beauty of the world and the need for people to connect. It is a well written book with great descriptions of people and things. Sometimes, it is a little bit boring because there are long texts about unimportant subjects, but in general it is a moving, touching and interesting book.
