The Secret Life of Bees is a novel written by Sue Monk Kidd. The book has won many prizes and has been sold over six million time in 35 different countries. Also there has been made a movie of this book, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
The story is about a 14-year old kid, named Lily, who lives in the south of the USA. Her father, T. Ray, abuses her and tells Lily that she killed her own mom. Lily believes this, but she can’t believe she killed the only thing in her life that loved her, even though it was an accident. The housekeeper, named Rosaleen is a black woman and she is the only one who Lily likes. Because of the fact that the story takes place in 1964 and racism was a big issue in that time it, black people were treated very bad and they had less rights. Despite this Rosaleen wants to vote and when she and Lily go into town to vote, a group of racists beat up Rosaleen and she and Lily get into jail. Lily wants get away of her life so she decides to flee with Rosaleen. They don’t know where to go so they ask if they can sleep on a beekeeping farm. Lily feels as if she’s home for the first time in her life and she even falls in love with a boy from the beekeeping family, Zach. This love can’t grow because Zach is black, so the people around don’t let them stay together. It looks like Lily’s life is getting as it was again when the only thing she loves gets taken away from her again when Zach has to go to jail..
“Someone who thinks death is the scariest thing doesn’t know a thing about life.”
This quote shows how Lily thinks of life when she’s living with T. Ray because of all the violence he uses on her. I think the writing style of Sue Monk Kidd is very good and that is one reason why I liked the book. Another thing that made me want to read the book was because of the situation of the story. The fact that the story takes place in 1964 and the people who lived back then had a whole different way of thinking about life got me interested. I couldn’t imagine how hard it was for black people to live a normal life during that time. Kidd illustrated the hate against normal black people really well. Also the hate Lily has against T. Ray is described very natural. She hates him whenever she gets another punishment intensely, but whenever T. Ray is a little bit nicer than normal she has the hope that T. Ray will treat her as a normal father does. The prizes this book has won already tell that this book is very good, I can’t deny this. I think the best thing about this book was how Kidd describes the situation and characters and how natural she expresses the thoughts of these characters.
