” The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The_Great_Gatsby_by_asianpride7625-1n7ow7n1I’ve always wondered how people lived in de 20th century, especially before the two World Wars. After reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book “ The Great Gatsby” I got a general idea of how life was for the wealthy, and I can tell you it’s not as fun as you might think it is.

“I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others–young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.”

“ The Great Gatsby” tells us the sorry of a young man named Nick Carraway, who moves to the fictional West Egg, near Long Island, New York. He becomes obsessed with his neighbor Jay Gatsby, whom he meets at one of Gatsby’s many extravagant parties. Nick learns that Gatsby tried to impress Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby’s old lover and Nick’s cousin. Nick tries to help Gatsby, but the love doesn’t go both ways. When Gatsby dies Nick is one of the few attending his funeral.

The main subject in “ The Great Gatsby” is the “ American dream”. Fitzgerald tried to show us how corrupted the American dream at the time was, and maybe still is. Gone were the ideals of it. It wasn’t something for achieving happiness in life, but it rather became something for earning more money, or in Gatsby’s case, changing the past with money.

Fitzgerald does this in a very particular manner, in which he uses long sentences and words that are nowadays less used. The peculiar thing though, is the fact that he can also give meaning to some events without having to write about their significance. You read about some place or event and you immediately know how important it is. This gives many interpretations of such an event.

“I wanted to get out and walk eastward toward the park through the soft twilight, but each time I tried to go I became entangled in some wild, strident argument which pulled me back, as if with ropes, into my chair. Yet high over the city our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets… I saw him too, looking up and wondering. I was within and without.”

Another thing Fitzgerald succeeded at, are the characters. They are round characters, we know at many times what they think. At the same time though they are also a little mysterious, and I think that’s because of the fact that you don’t always know why they act in certain ways. Still they’re realistic enough for us to think that they really lived.

The plot Fitzgerald chose for is a great one, but a sad one. The timelessness of the plot is a big reason as to why the plot is still realistic nowadays, considering the fact that it was written 90 years ago. The plot is also very realistic, which is not strange if you know that Fitzgerald visited many parties of rich people during his time writing this book.

“I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others–young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life.”

So if you want to learn about life during the twenties, you must read this book. The book is more than just that, it’s a mirror of our materialistic society. It teaches us about the meaning of life and the essence of it. It tells us to dream as long as we don’t get lost in our dreams. What we will do though, is get lost in “ The Great Gatsby”. It’s definitely a book you have to read at least once.

If you want more “The Great Gatsby” this is the trailer of a recent movie, inspired by the book.
