The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I’m going to tell you about a book I read during my Christmas holidays. I want to share this book with you because I think it is a very interesting book.

The title is :The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and it is written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The story takes place in the 19th century in London. The main character in the book is Mr. Utterson . He is a respected lawyer and has a lot of respectable friends, among them is Dr. Jekyll. Mr. Utterson is taking care of the will of Dr. Jekyll, and this is where the story starts, because in his will Dr. Jekyll leaves everything to Mr. Hyde, a man Mr. Utterson has never heard of. One day his Cousin Mr. Enfield tells him a  story about a strange accident he witnessed the other day involving Mr. Hyde. Confused by this story Mr Utterson decides to try and find this Mr. Hyde. His cousin tells him  that  Mr. Hyde lives in a  small house in a narrow street which, they will find out later, is in fact the backdoor to the laboratory of Dr. Jekyll. Their encounter is very unpleasant and now Mr Uttterson wants to confront his friend Dr. Jekyll with all this. When he asks Dr. Jekyll about Hyde, Jekyll tells him that he has great interest in Mr. Hyde and he wants Mr. Utterson to promise him that he will help Mr. Hyde should Jekyll die. Because they are old friends Mr Utterson promises this, but then a man gets killed and it looks like Mr. Hyde is the killer.  Mr. Utterson can’t understand why his friend is defending this killer. Then a mutual friend dies and among his documents is a letter adressed to Utterson, not to be opened till after the death or dissappearance of Dr. Jekyll.

When Dr. Jekyll also dies and leaves him some documents it is time for Mr. Utterson to read the letter and the documents. In the letter from the friend  the secret of Dr. Jekyll is revealed. Then he reads the confession of Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Jekyll was experimenting with chemicals and drugs to find an other side inside himself, a darker side. He wants  to find this person within himself. After many experiments he succeeds .  He can change from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. But the personality of Mr Hyde gets stronger and stronger ,and it gets more difficult to control him, everytime he needs more drugs to transform back to Dr. Jekyll. He wants to end it all but Mr Hyde is too strong and it is impossible to become Dr. Jekyll anymore. Finally there seems to be only one solution to end this.

The writer Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 in Scotland. He was a novelist, a poet and a travel writer. He wrote  well known adventure novels, Treasure Island and Kidnapped are classics.  He took his family on long travels, mainly in the Pacific. They lived for years in the Hawaiian Islands, the Samoan Islands and Tahiti. In his travel books he writes about these travels through the Pacific. Robert Louis Stevenson died in 1894. He is one of most translated writers in the world.

In 1886 he wrote Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is a psycological thriller about good against evil.  It is an fascinating  book about the dual  personality inside a man. Stevenson shows that a person can have a darker side within although he might look respectable. The story is told by an omniscient narrator (Mr. Utterson) and it stays exciting till the end. I especially liked the last chapters of the book when everything is explained by reading the letter.  The book is easy to read and the story is gripping, and I can recommend it to everyone.
